He also has a deep knowledge of corporate governance and securities law. Since 2005, he has been a partner at Choate, Hall & Stewart, LLP. His legal experience spans M&A, real estate, and life sciences.

Born in California, Bill Asher graduated with an MBA from the University of Bill Asher Southern California. Later, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science from Dartmouth College. In his early career, he worked as an assistant cameraman at Universal Studios. After his stint at Universal, he moved back to New York with his mother, who had divorced her husband.

In 1953, as his family was preparing to move, he wrote a short story for his mother’s birthday. This was the first step in his career as a TV writer and producer. The story, “The Shadow on the Window”, involved teenagers holding hostages. It was a crude cold war science-fiction drama.

Soon, he was hired as a television director. After a year and a half, he had a series of channels on DirecTV, one of which he sold for more than $130 million. When he sold the network, he had the largest number of channels on DirecTV.

With his networks, he changed the TV and satellite industry. Instead of using traditional marketing methods, he employed a more “out of the box” approach. For example, he signed licensing deals for vodka, snowboards, and a surfboard.

He later expanded his companies to include live music venues. He also expanded his nightclubs, which were incredibly successful. He eventually sold his first club, the Monkey Knife Fight, to Bally’s Entertainment for more than $100 million.

He was an avid surfer and loved the ocean. Eventually, his love of the beach inspired him to produce the Beach Party series. Featuring scantily clad beach girls, the films starred Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, and fading Hollywood stars.

Bill Asher has also made a name for himself by developing a specialized guitar company. Asher Guitars & Lap Steels is a Los Angeles boutique guitar shop that specializes in handcrafted stellar quality instruments. Some of Asher’s loyal clients are Fleetwood Mac and Paul Simon.

Asher’s business experience and skill in a variety of industries makes him a valuable addition to the MassVentures Board of Directors. He is an expert on supporting the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Massachusetts. In addition, he has deep experience in corporate finance, life sciences, and technology.

Aside from being a well-respected businessman, he has also been a mentor to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles for more than 20 years. He also enjoys traveling, athletics, and a passion for the University of Arizona.
